Assignments for Computer Literacy

Assignment : Register for this class by going to the student
activities page under C/IL 102 and following the directions there.
Do this by Sept 8, 2008 at 11:59 pm. This process will be demoed in class on the 3rd.
Assignment:You will need several softtware programs on your computer: CoreFTPlite (or equevalent-
I use Filezilla), KomopZer (or equivalent). If you have an older version of Windows or a
macintosh or something else,
see me. These programs should be installed on your computer before the second class
meeting.
- NVU available from www.nvu.com or KompoZer which is linked from nvw.com as
well
- Core FTP Lite available from my web site under Resources. FileZilla is
available from a source found via your favorite search engine.
- irfanview which can be found by your favorite search engine. only if you
wish to manipulate photos.
Required Project(s):
Each of the individual projects will be graded on a scale of 0 to 2 as follows:
- 0.0 - did not turn in project
- 0.5 - turned in a satisfactory project a day late or turned in a substandard project on time.
- 1.0 - turned in project on time. The work was satisfactory
- 1.5 - turned in project on time. The work was very satisfactory.
- 2.0 - turned in project on time. The work was outstanding
NOTE: I am the sole judge of what constitutes substandard, satisfactory, very satisfactory,
or outstanding. If you wish to discuss you ideas with me either in person or via e-mail or IM, I'll
be happy to give you my impressions.
A project of your choice involving data analysis and presentation. This project will
consist of four sub-projects:
- project proposal (a word processed document) printed and turned in at the beginning of class
on the due date or before. A copy of the paper will also be placed on he Web site of the project
no later than two calendar days after the due date for the Web site (see below).
- A Web site on which the project will be stored. Typically this will be linked from your
homework page from the lab Web page assignment.
- An Excel spreadsheet with the data being analysed (and it's analysis). This spreadsheet will
be placed on the Web site of the project by the due date.
- A PowerPoint presentation of your project with its findings. This will be placed on the Web
site for the project by its due date and you will be expected present this project to the class. The
presentation should be from 5 to 10 minutes in length.
Note that with 50 or more students in the two sections you will need to sign up for a
presentation time early to get the best times.
Goals and Deadlines
You will e-mail me a very short description of your project which I will approve (or not) via e-mail.
I may make suggestions which should be addressed by your paper. DUE DATE: SEPT 9
You will do a written project proposal for my approval. It should be at least two pages, double
spaced, in MS Word (equivalent) format, turned in to me at the beginning of class on the due date.
DUE DATE: SEPT 24
You will create a Web site for your project linked to the Web site that you created for the Web
site creation lab. In the event that you are not taking the lab then you will have to create such a
site to house your project. The grading for this Web site will be similar to the grading for the
project proposal. DUE DATE: OCT 7
You will gather data and analyse it in an excel spreadsheet for the purpose of presenting a
solution to the problem which was approved in the above proposal. The spreadsheet analysis will be
put on a Web page associated with your project. It will be grades similarly to the other parts of
this project.DUE DATE: OCT 28
Finally you will create a PowerPoint presentation of your project ans link it to your project
Web site.DUE DATE: NOV 18
NOTE: the presentations will be given in class starting on Nov 19.
