C/IL 102          Computing & Information Literacy

Fall 2009

Course Information: Computer and Information literacy is a general education requirement at the University of Scranton which can be fulfilled by taking this course. This course has two components: a lecture, C/IL 102 and a lab C/IL 102L. The courses are separate, taught by different instructors and have separate grades. In order to receive credit for either course you must be enrolled in both courses. The only exception to this rule is if you have previously taken both C/IL 102 and C/IL 102L and satisfied the requirement in one but not the other. In this case you may take the part for which you previously received no credit.  In order to satisfy the general education requirement you must receive a grade of C or better in both C/IL 102 and C/IL 102L. A grade of C- does not satisfy the requirement. A student may not receive credit for more than one computer literacy sequence: C/IL 102/102L, C/IL 104/104L. The course may not be taken pass/fail.

Text: none, the "text" material for this course is found on the Computer and Information Literacy Course Site http://www.cs.scranton.edu/~cil102

NOTE: The text for the lab, C/IL 102L and a booklet with pin number for the software is for the lab ONLY.

Attendance Policy: I plan to attend all classes and I expect you to do the same. An absence is excused if I accept it as a sensible reason for missing class. A planned excused absence is one that is known about in advance . An unplanned excused absence is one that is not known about in advance such as illness. An unexcused absence is one whose reason I am not informed of or which I don't accept as a sensible reason for missing class. Absences due to illness will not be excused unless medical documentation is available. More than two unexcused absences may result in a reduction of your course grade. More than four total absences may result in a reduction of your course grade. At the very least excessive absences means that IF the grades are curved, then yours wont be. You are responsible for all work missed due to absence. You are responsible for lateness of work for unexcused or planned excused absences. I will take attendance using a seating chart and will put a mark by your name if you are not in your assigned seat. It is your responisbility to make sure that you are sitting in the correct seat. If you arrive late it is your responsibility to inform me immediately after class or you will be marked absent. Two "lates" will count as an absence.

Grading Policy and scale: The grade for this class will be based on meeting the following requirements.

A set of four projects will be done (as listed on the assignments page. If your grade on these 4 projects averages 1 or better you will receive a grade in this course of either C or C+. If your grade on this group of projects is is less than 1 then you will receive a grade of C- or below.

There will be an opportunity to do an additional project (as descrobed on the assignments page ("B" project) which can raise your grade up to a B+ or less.

If you elect to take the OPTIONAL final exam and make a satisfactory score on it then you can raise your grade above that.

In summary, to receive a grade of C or C+ you need to score a satisfactory average (1) on the four required projects OR score an average below 1 on the four projects and perform one or more of the optional parts.

To receive a grade above C+ but below A- you need to perform satisfactorily on the four required projects, and do an additional optional project.

To receive a grade of A- or above you need to do all of the above and take the final exam and score a satisfactory (C or better) grade on it.

NOTE that if you score below 1 on the four required parts of the course the additional work may only be used to reais your grade to a C or C+.
