For Windows I recommend notepad++.
For OS X I recommend smultron or textwrangler

First and second Assignments for both Windows and OS X

Core FTP for Windows.

For OS X download Fetch (and register it as an educational user).

For OS X you may use the built in terminal and telnet command.
